There is someting incorrect. The pressure plate that holds the diaphragm is always rotating with the flywheel and does not stand still when the clutch is disengaged! (0:50 - 1:03) The pressure plate is mounted onto the flywheel with screws and so has to turn together with it. The release bearing (steel blue) is the unit that "separates" the rotating parts from the fixed ones.

@Texarmageddon According to rumors, key word there, the new engine will have more tq due to mechanics and leverage, and it will be lower in the rpms too. Also, will have around 20%+ more mpg but, as I said before, mpg is very dependent on gearing, weight, and lesser extent, Cd. Last time they pulled the 7 from the import market, they redesigned the engine and we got the 8. they may be up to the same thing. If so, it will be back and even better than before, time will tell. I agree cars are heavy

Supposedly, mazda is working on the 1.6L that will have a huge increase in tq. an increase in available tq in lower rpms will increase mpg in lew of compression. Kinda like a diesel. since the rotary cannot go much higher in compression, the rotor itself can be made larger yet, thinner to maintain power and increase tq as you would stroke a piston engine. When mazda will release a version like this is up in the air.

@Texarmageddon i dont disagree with the mpg thing entirely. Its understanding where it comes from is why people are just lazy and believe most anything someone says. Personally, i believe that the rotary should be put in a smaller sportier car that resembles the older 7 and much lighter with taller gearing for top gear and would get 30+mpg. One day, I will do an experiment to prove my point with the rotary mpg vs a similar power curve piston engine.

@cliffkemp I'm going strictly off of manufactured MPG ratings. Second, it's banned from import. Meaning no more can enter the country. You can have the car, and you can probably buy used ones, but no more are being imported for this reason. the official site list these ratings. Which by those ratings alone, the ratings that the government goes by are official. We cannot change those. If those are set by the company than that is it. Mazda says 16/23. Sti/ Evo says the same.

the biggest problem is people just spew what they hear and not understand how things are they way they are. just like the whole oil thing, the mpg thing is crap. It is a sports car and mpg should not be an issue anyway. the 8s mpg is what it is because it is geared so low to take advantage of its high rpm power range. only other issue I have with the car is it is too heavy but, it is what it is.

@Texarmageddon another example. my talon vs todays evo/sti. My talon, although 20 years older gets better mpg than the sti/evo. it is dynotested to 220whp and 264wtq. The whole reason why i get 30 mpg on the hwy is because of gearing and Cd. the sti revs higher at 60 than my talon and so does the evo. my talon is slightly lighter too. My Cd is better at .29. also, the 8 is decent for its gearing, weight, cd, and hp comparatively speaking and not bad as you say.

@Texarmageddon A good example is the kia sephia vs the kia sportage. they had the same engine. the sephia had slightly taller gearing weighed much less and better Cd. it was several hundred lbs lighter. The sephia got around 35mpg on highway but the sportage only got in the high 20s. The sportage revved higher to maintain speed, worse Cd, and the extra weight made it worse. same engine and power rating.

The only reason a vette or similar car will get over 20 mpg on the highway is one reason, top gear is so tall, they will pull very few rpms over idle when doing highway speed. As I have said time and time again, hp, weight, gearing, and to a lesser extent Cd dictate what mpg is going to be. nobody can change the laws of physics no matter how much they want to. I have gotten almost 30 mpg on my 8 before just to see how good I could get it.

@Texarmageddon just like my talon that is just as powerful as todays sti and evo, they get the mileage they do because when you are cruising down the road, the turbo is not being used or used very very little. Since they rely on the turbo to get the hp they have, if you were to turbo the rx8 and drive similar, and tune the 8 to 300+hp, it will still get 25 mpg just as my car. I can explain differently if you didnt get that.

The s2k has been discontinued though and the z will not be far behind. The mpg example you gave is untrue about the wrx and evo. I have a talon and will explain.

It was the same with the RX-7.. high maintenance, low sales, and mpg/emissions that were barely making it each year. The amount of money it cost to boost the engine to power lvls to that of a conventional piston engine is just to great. I love the small engines. But small engines can't make high horsepower for cheap.

@lostlander everything is fine as long as there is metal between the lightning source and the non metallic object you are thinking, so if you have something like a plastic barrel in the back of the truck and the lightning hits it directly then it will be toast, if the lightning hits the truck first in a metallic spot then the plastic barrel in the back will be fine. there is a video explaining this, search "850 KV" in youtube and check the 1st video
